Cumberland, Maryland

The eight foot tall bronze statue of George Washington is mounted on a 5 foot tall stacked stone pedestal featuring information about Washington’s life and times in Western Maryland. The sculpture stands in the middle of the city of Cumberland, Maryland on the historic site of Fort Cumberland, Washington’s outpost during The French and Indian War.  Washington is depicted as a young Lt. Colonel in the Virginia Militia.

Utilizing historic elements such as Washington’s original accurate bust by sculptor Houdon created during Washington’s lifetime and the reconstruction by Washington’s face as undertaken by studies conducted by Mt. Vernon, Susan was able to present a true representation of Washington’s face and figure at that time of his life. Her replication of his uniform and musket was assisted by the Smithsonian Institution.
