The Coal Woman

The Coal Woman

Bronze
Twenty inch sculpture
on granite base

In commemoration of the women coal carriers of the Caribbean circa 1840, this is a model for the future twelve foot tall, full scale installation of the sculpture as planned for St Croix, USVI. The sculpture honors the women dockworkers that served Caribbean ports under backbreaking circumstances for a dollar a day. Their labor was significant in building the economy throughout the Caribbean. Ultimately they were successful in helping to achieve human rights by mounting a non- violent revolution that ended this practice. The site for the large scale sculpture is the pier for arriving ships in Frederiksted, St Croix.
