Historical Figure Sculpture
The Coal Women of St Thomas

This monumental sculpture is planned for installation in Charlotte Amalie in St. Thomas at the waterfront port now under renovation. The sculpture commemorates the extraordinary efforts and extreme labor of the women that fueled the ships carrying Caribbean goods throughout the world. These women built the economy of the Virgin Islands.
In blistering heat, all hours of the day and night for less than a dollar a day, the women carried thousands of pounds of coal in baskets on their head while walking up a gangway to the ships.
The sculpture will greet ships arriving to port and will provide an important view into the history of the Virgin Islands
